‘Employment Concern’ seeks to bring a workers’ voice to employment issues in the UK, with a common sense challenge to the government and employers stance on unemployment and by advocating socially responsible employment practices that prioritise British workers for jobs in the UK. It aims to question contradictions in UK government employment policies that are affecting both blue-collar and white-collar workers, and which remain in place even while the UK employment crisis deepens. These include UK government support for structures that allow effectively, for an unlimited supply of labour into the UK, helping employers drive down wages and working conditions. This cheap labour supply is also a deterrent to skills training, in effect deskilling the UK. The UK Commission on Employment and Skills Commission, the government-funded quango that advises the UK government and directs the skills research budget, is made up almost entirely of business representatives. ‘Employment Concern’ brings worker perspectives to public sphere debates on employment and skills. In addition to highlighting inadequacies and contradictions in employment policy, this website will be a repository for information on employment issues, provide information on current employment issues, and co-ordinate public action towards beneficial change for UK worker welfare.
